Work began on Novemand by 2011 the steel structure had reached 18 floors. In the wake of this ambitious urban plan, in 2008 the city turned to Marshall Strabala, one of the designers of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, to build a building that would be Shanghai’s tallest but also a symbol of sustainability for this ever-expanding city. Oriental Pearl TV Tower was the first to rise in 1995, followed by Jin Mao Tower in 1999, and the Shanghai World Financial Center, which now dominates all the images of the city, in 2008. Since 1993, urban planners had chosen Pudong as the location for a financial center and the building of some of the most innovative skyscrapers in history. Shanghai is today one of the most sprawling cities in the world. Finally, hanging sky gardens, every 15 floors, act as natural air filters and offer the tower’s inhabitants places to relax. And a geothermal plant helps cut the bills for heating and air conditioning. A series of wind power turbines were installed to take advantage of strong winds, ensuring a yearly production of 350.000 kwh. Several systems were realized inside the tower to reduce consumption to a minimum. To reduce the impact of wind gusts, the outside has a curvy shape designed with a BIM simulation that reduces wind pressure by 24%, allowing the tower to withstand gusts of more than 50 meters per second. The outside is made of panels that form a second armor protecting the tower from winds and temperature shifts, making it a giant thermos. This means the building is wrapped with a double surface that separates the interior’s offices and apartments and common areas from the exterior which holds sky gardens and linking areas. To do so, they adopted a number of engineering and architectural solutions that today make this skyscraper an international case study.įirst of all, the team used a double skin solution for the outside of the tower, the first time for a building this size. The idea was to create a tower that guaranteed the maximum of comfort inside while also reducing consumption to a minimum. The Pearl River Tower has housed a number of multinational enterprises, including ABB (China), Otis (China), Carrier, SGD Asia Pacific, Regus, Ford Motor, HBA Design, Alpine Electronics (China), Chugai Pharma, PCM (China), Jotun Group, CITIC Securities, Shenyin & Wanguo Securities, CNINSURE Inc., China Railway Oil, China Huaneng and Ping An Group.Obtaining the three stars LEED Gold certification, the highest award, by the China Green Building Committee, was the design team’s goal from the start, a team led by the American architect Marshall Strabala. The Wall Street Journal dubbed it “one of the world’s most energy-efficient commercial office towers” and the BBC called it the “world’s greenest tower.” While many of these sustainable attributes have been incorporated individually into skyscrapers around the world, the Pearl River Tower design represents the first time that they are used collectively. Source: Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) Other sustainable design and engineering elements- including radiant ceiling cooling system, solar panels, double-glazing curtain wall, demand-based ventilation air, and daylight responsive controls - all contribute to the building’s energy efficiency. One of the most notable features is the tower’s sculpted design, which directs wind to a pair of openings at its mechanical floors, pushing turbines to generate energy for the building. The design optimizes the solar path and utilizes the sun to the building’s advantage. Rising at the heart of Pearl River New City, the 214,000-square-meter Pearl River Tower has garnered global attention for its innovative green initiatives, including zero energy consumption.Īccording to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), the tower’s sleek, aerodynamic form was developed through a careful understanding of solar and wind patterns around the site. The 71-story skyscraper is the first project in Guangzhou to achieve LEED-CS platinum certification, and is considered China’s first true green skyscraper and the greenest building in China. The Pearl River Tower, an environmentally-smart building and landmark within the Guangzhou skyline, has passed LEED-CS platinum certification.
